plunged through the lobby. He charged past milling travellers, almost bowling a woman over on the steps outside, shouting profuse apologies over his shoulder.
He sped down the sidewalk, pedestrians parting for him like the Red Sea as though he had wild eyes and insanity on his mind. Io’s only thought was of self-preservation and he didn’t know why, because Blake was gone.
He darted up the nearest alleyway and came to a halt, hovering, staring frantically at piles of trash bags, a homeless guy asleep in layers of cardboard. Io threw open the lid of the Dumpster before him. He heaved himself up the side and landed on his ass inside, clawing the lid back into place behind him.
He squatted on rubbish, the stench nauseating him as he listened for the footsteps of the man who was going to put him in jail for murder. He couldn’t hear anything over the roaring of his own blood in his ears. He tried to slow his breathing, tried to take noiseless breaths, his eyes squeezed shut, every limb trembling in terror.
Oh God, that flush on Chris’ face hadn’t been arousal at all—it had been anxiety, and, now Io thought back, he had seen the unease in Chris’ eyes, something that should have warned him. Blake’s instincts had been right. He had been unsure about this, he hadn’t wanted to go but, instead, he had allowed Io to drag them both into the trap.
And now Blake was gone.
Io whimpered and clamped his hand over his mouth. He shook violently with both cold and fear. What was he going to do? He was alone in a strange town with only the clothes on his back. Blake’d had all their money in his pocket, and Io didn’t dare go back to their hotel room to retrieve his stuff. He was too scared that a welcoming committee would be there for him, even if he somehow managed to escape from this alleyway.
He rested his head against the side of the Dumpster and wept.
